Elton John is as famous for his decades of undeniable pop hits as he is for his wardrobe, but even rock legends sometimes need to clean out their closet. The “Your Song” singer is putting up over 200 pieces from his personal wardrobe on eBay. Given Elton John’s penchant for flair, most of the pieces are unsurprisingly unsubtle; they include sequined jackets, Union Jack hats, and leopard print coats, but there are a handful of toned-down pieces like Yohji Yamamoto dress shirts and Adidas tracksuits.
The “Rocket Man Resale” began on June 27 and ends on Saturday, July 6. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, which has raised over $600 million for HIV prevention and treatment since its founding in 1992.
What To Know About The Elton John Auction
“Giving new life to the cherished items from my wardrobe has always been special to me. For decades I’ve donated my closet’s treasures to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” said Elton John in a statement. In a video promoting the auction alongside husband David Furnish, John said, “Now that my tour days are over, I’ve been pondering ways to make the world a little more fabulous,” adding, “I’ve had a revelation. What if everyone could dress a little more like me?”
The pieces come from Elton John’s Atlanta home in the Peachtree neighborhood, which he sold last year. The ongoing eBay sale follows a Christie’s auction of art and jewelry from his Atlanta home from earlier this year, which included a Banksy triptych that sold for nearly 2 million dollars. The eBay auction is comparably more affordable; bids for most pieces started at $26.60, a nod to the address of his Atlanta home, and many of the more low-key items have bids under $200. In addition to the items from Elton’s personal wardrobe, his husband David Furnish, Donatella Versace, and others offered pieces for the Rocket Man Resale.
