Spanning 490 pages, On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service covers everything from Fauci’s early years growing up in Brooklyn, New York, to navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, as well as behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with presidents on key issues like global AIDS relief and infectious disease preparedness in the U.S.

“I had a very complicated relationship with President Trump,” Fauci spoke of the chapter titled “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not” during an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. “In the very beginning we got along very well. I write in the book I don’t know whether it’s because two guys from New York, him from Queens, me from Brooklyn, that we kind of understood each other and we got along very, very well early on. It was only when what he was saying and began to say — because he wanted so much for this thing to go away that he was saying things that were incorrect.”
While the introspective memoir also dives into his crucial role during the early years of the Covid-19 pandemic and in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view, the book also focuses on his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises. Fauci recently testified about his involvement in the pandemic response at a House Oversight Committee hearing, but was quickly derailed when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Green refused to address Fauci as a doctor, and refused to allow him to answer any questions.
